Flow of Getting a Job in Japan
The process of finding a job in Japan generally follows these steps:
First, conduct job-hunting activities similarly to how Japanese nationals do. Based on your qualifications and background, make sure to research the types of jobs you are eligible to apply for.
Once you receive a job offer and confirm your intent to join the company, you will sign an employment contract. A copy of this contract is required when applying for a visa, so it must be finalized before you submit your visa application. However, since obtaining a visa is not guaranteed at this stage, it’s important to confirm with the company whether your visa application will be supported.
f a visa is required, you or your employer will need to apply to the Immigration Bureau. In most cases, the employer will handle the application, but in some situations, you may need to apply yourself. It’s a good idea to clarify this during your job interview.
Once your visa is approved, you can officially start working. Certain documents must be submitted to the Immigration Bureau after you join the company, so ensure you prepare these in advance to meet the deadlines.

Generally, jobs considered simple labor, such as factory line work, are not approved for a visa. Be sure to clarify the specific type of work you will be engaged in and confirm that it meets the requirements for obtaining a visa.
Verification of Educational and Work Experience
To obtain a work visa in Japan, you must demonstrate a background that qualifies you for the specific position. This includes:
- Educational Background: Clearly state the subjects you majored in at university and how they relate to the job you are applying for.
- Work Experience: Provide detailed information about the nature of your previous work and the number of years you have worked in relevant positions.
Even if you impress during the interview with a reputable company, failure to meet these requirements will result in a visa denial. Therefore, ensure that your educational and professional background aligns with the visa criteria you intend to apply for.
Verification of employment conditions
Prior to obtaining a visa, you must finalize an employment contract. This contract should clearly outline the duration, salary, work location, job responsibilities, and other essential details. It’s important to ensure that the contract complies with Japanese labor laws to avoid any legal issues.
